No doubt the vintage Patek that gets most people’s hearts pumping in the sale is a reference 1579 chronograph in steel. These are rare – this is only the ninth steel example to have appeared in public to date according to research by Christie’s. In addition, the present watch comes from the descendant of the original owner.
The slightly unusual thing about it, and something that would generally kill the value of other vintage watches, is that the case was replaced in 1967, 20 years after the watch was first made. With Patek watches, the re-casing does indeed affect the value, but we are still talking about a watch that is expected to perform very well.
