At SIHH in January 2015, A. Lange & Söhne will present three Saxonia models with new design features intended to further enhance their intrinsic gracefulness. Most intriguing to me is the size change on the base Saxonia — what do you think of a 35mm case size? Yup, that’s where the new base Saxonia is measuring in at. We’ll get into that in a moment. But for now suffice it to say that Lange’s the base Saxonia, Saxonia Automatic, and Saxonia Dual Time are all receiving changes, which I will break down below.

Never one to get caught up in the “big watch” craze, Lange is known for its modest case sizes. In fact its iconic Lange 1 has been a 38.5mm watch since it was introduced 20 years ago! The base Saxonia (with manual wind caliber) now has a 35mm case, a decrease of 2mm vs. prior. In the last 5 or so years, this is basically an unheard of size in terms of smallness. Though it does reflect a trend towards smaller diameter case size which started a couple years ago, 35mm is quite small compared to most of today’s watches which trend more toward 39mm-40mm, plus or minus a couple mm. Correspondingly, the L941.1 manufacture calibre has been reduced a couple mm as well.
